Bone Gap blends elements of realistic fiction and fantasy in
to a beautifully crafted story. Set in Bone Gap, Illinois, the story follows
Finn O’Sullivan and his older brother, Sean, as he pieces together the mystery
surrounding the kidnapping of a girl close to them both, Roza. Roza has been missing for several months and most people in the town presume that she is never coming back. As the only witness in the kidnapping, many people find holes in Finn's story and can't seem to identify why he is unable to describe the man who took Rosa. Finn tries to piece together the mystery and as he does begins to fall for a local girl, Petey, known for her sharp attitude and less than beautiful face. As Finn continues his search and grows closer to Petey, Rosa tells her story from where she has been taken. Slowly she reveals that the place where she is kept is not in an dimension we know. After solving some of his own mysteries, Finn is able to cross dimensions and find Rosa. As the story unfolds, Finn and the people in his world learn to face fears and find love and beauty in unexpected ways.
I recommend this book to high school
readers (some 8th grade readers may be included). Readers who enjoy
mystery or fantasy will thoroughly enjoy this story. I’d also recommend this
book for readers who want to try a love story or who are looking for an unusual
love story. Laura Ruby was able to weave romance through mystery and fantasy
without making the love between characters feel fabricated or unreal. Bone Gap was a fun, entertaining, and
charming read. It was a perfect book to curl up with.
